Waste collection on public holidays in Montréal

Collections run on every public holiday except December 25 and January 1. Enter your address to see what your sector publishes for those two dates.

Next holiday season's exceptions aren't published yet: the City loads them into Info-Collectes in December. The rest of the year the rule is simple — collections run on every public holiday.

The answer fits in one sentence, and it is the City’s own: “Household garbage, bulky item, recycling, food waste, green waste and dead leaf collections are maintained everywhere.” It holds for every statutory holiday of the year — Easter, National Patriots’ Day, June 24, July 1, Labour Day, Thanksgiving. If your collection falls on a Monday holiday, put your bins out as usual. The City’s public-holidays page repeats it, holiday by holiday.

The only two exceptions are December 25 and January 1. On those days most boroughs move the collection — up to December 24 and 31, or back to December 26 and January 2 — and not all the same way, nor for every material. The City publishes those changes each December, borough by borough, on the same page. A few sectors also write them into the Secteurs Info-collectes open dataset; that is what the table below gathers, and what the address lookup shows for your sector.

Two footnotes. Écocentres, unlike collections, are closed on statutory holidays. And the rule is about statutory holidays, not a borough’s one-off notices — the open data is not a live feed.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a collection on Labour Day Monday?
Yes. The City maintains all its collections — garbage, recycling, food waste, green waste, bulky items — on every statutory holiday of the year except December 25 and January 1. Put your bins out as usual.
And on Thanksgiving, Easter, June 24 or July 1?
Same rule: collections run as usual everywhere in Montréal, with no shift. The only holidays that change anything are Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
What happens on December 25 and January 1?
In most boroughs the collection on those two days is moved — up to December 24 and 31, or back to December 26 and January 2 — and the rule varies by borough and by material. The City publishes the list in December; enter your address to see what your sector writes in the open data.
Are écocentres open on public holidays?
No. The municipal écocentres are closed on statutory holidays, on top of their Monday closure. Curbside collections, on the other hand, do run.
